Outernational Series at Le Guess Who
Honored to be a guest curator for Le Guess Who this year. The theme Outernational is an outgrowth of my work this year at Pioneer Works which is focused on building global solidarity through music and conversations around our interconnected struggles.
“Outernationalism” is a term of composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, which is about the obliteration of borders creatively, spiritually and politically, exploring our relationships outside of global capitalism and nation-states. After a year of touring during overlapping global catastrophes, the conversations I had on the road with artists and audiences across the globe reminded me, that recognizing how we are intertwined is necessary for our survival.
For my curation, I focused on MENA/SWANA artists in a time of profound dehumanization and artists who are outspoken about their solidarities. The musical curation is just one part of the Outernational project at LGW which will also include discussions, sessions, workshops and more, so stay tuned.
